Livability alive and well with TIGER II

As the new round of $600 million in US Department of Transportation TIGER grants are leaked, many of them support transit and walkability — including a streetcar line in Atlanta and highway-to-boulevard project in New Haven, Connecticut.

The biggest winner so far in the second round of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program is $47 million for the Atlanta streetcar line, Streetsblog reports.

Like the first round of TIGER grants that totaled $1.5 billion, TIGER II grants reported so far include a mix of transportation projects including transit, bridges, and highways. Some of the highway projects are for making thoroughfares more livable, as is the case with a $16 million grant to convert Route 34 to a boulevard in New Haven, Connecticut, also reported by Streetsblog.
