Seven hundred housing units, plus other buildings, will be constructed in a tight configuration around the Forest Hills rail and bus station in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston if the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has its way. The project would be the largest transit-oriented development yet undertaken by the transportation agency. The cash-strapped agency has reaped more than $50 million from real estate deals since 2005, and sees them as source of both revenue and new riders, The Boston Globe reported June 15. To alleviate increased traffic congestion near the station, some streets would be converted to one-way, with bicycle lanes added.
