Pushing the shared-space envelope
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    JAN. 24, 2013
Shared-space is the idea of letting cars, pedestrians, and bicyclists mix on a thoroughfare with little regulation of movement. This idea has mostly been applied to low-volume streets, but a shared-space intersection with 26,000 vehicles per day has been built in Poynton, Cheshire, England. As the first-year benefits are becoming clear for all kinds of users and the town High Street, skeptics of the project are turning into supporters. A detailed report on the project was published in the January-February 2013 issue of Better! Cities & Towns.
