Organization: The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) is leading the revival of walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods. A membership-based advocacy organization, CNU works to advance and promote the principles of New Urbanism. CNU promotes healthy, sustainable urban design and planning techniques to common practice. Summary:  CNU seeks a highly organized, efficient, and creative individual to serve as Program Assistant. The Program Assistant will report directly to the President & CEO, performing a variety of administrative and program coordination tasks. 

Qualities: CNU seeks a Program Assistant with qualities that distinguish him/her from the crowd. The ideal candidate will display the following:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. CNU has staff in three states, requiring excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills - skilled in interacting and maintaining effective relationships with a diverse group of individuals
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and projects, while staying on deadline
  • Ability to work independently and with a team, including CNU staff and board
  • Entrepreneurial thinker and doer, who has the ability to see what needs to be done and does it
  • Ability to prepare letters, reports, and other documents for publication
  • Team-oriented, with flexibility and openness to developing new skills
  • Knowledge of and interest in New Urbanism, sustainable development, urban issues, and the built environment
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university; or a level of education that, together with experience and training, demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite in a Mac OS environment
  • Graphic design skills, including proficiency in Adobe InDesign, a plus

Responsibilities: The range of responsibilities for the Program Associate may include:

Program Support (40%)

  • Assist with the full range of CNU programs, including (but not limited to) CNU’s new municipal membership program, Legacy Charrette program, and member-led work.
  • Build webpages, facilitate member-led efforts, and write draft reports and position papers with national experts
  • Attend and support the annual Congress

Support the President & CEO (20%)

  • Prepare meeting logistics and materials, including briefing papers, reports, and agendas
  • Anticipate CEO needs on future commitments (e.g., think about additional meetings that could be scheduled when traveling to a city to give a speech)
  • Oversee calendar and long-term scheduling
  • Research speech and event topics and assist with preparation of briefing materials
  • Create, produce, prepare, and format materials for presentations, including PowerPoint presentations
  • Organize conference calls and meetings
  • Coordinate and schedule speaking arrangements
  • Book flights, hotels, ground transportation, and make other travel arrangements
  • Other tasks as needed 
  • Assist with development and fundraising activities (20%)
  • Manage database of fundraising contacts, track solicitations, and follow up on pledges
  • Assist with fundraising calls and major gift solicitations, and prepare follow up correspondence
  • Assist with development and implementation of major donor campaign, year end donor appeal, and special appeals

Assist with Board of Directors activities (10%)

  • Organize tri-annual Board meetings and all logistics
  • Manage Board listserv and communicate all meeting details in a timely and organized fashion
  • Staff Board and committee meetings (e.g. Executive Committee)
  • Record Board and committee meeting minutes
  • Prepare Board and committee meeting packets in coordination with staff
  • Maintain calendar of Board meetings
  • Track Board member terms, annual membership compliance, and meeting attendance
  • At the direction of the President & CEO respond to requests from Board members
  • Manage Board page on CNU.org

Other Functions (10%)

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned 
  • Promotion Potential: This is an entry-level position with the potential for promotion.  

Salary: Salary based on experience.
