Human scale and meaning are keys to traditional architecture's appeal

The polarization that America is experiencing in its politics also afflicts debates of architectural style, Craig Williams says in guest commentary in Washington Business Journal. "Architectural discourse should be wiser than "either/or," asserts Williams, a principal in David M. Schwartz Architects. Schwartz says what's needed is a "people-sensitive, pedestrian-friendly, socially active architecture," whatever its style. Humanistic touches are possible in a modernist vocabulary, he acknowledges. Nonetheless, the chief example he cites of a building that inspires loyalty from its community is the Neo-Classical Schermerhorn Symphony Center, shown above in Nashville. Opened in 2006, the Schermerhorn was designed by his firm to evoke "European concert hall grandeur," Williams says. After being damaged by flooding, the building was restored through a community effort that raised millions of dollars, he says; it is a young but beloved landmark.
