Open Streets Project due for November
Street Plans Collaborative is working with the Alliance for Biking & Walking on the Open Streets Project, a comprehensive guide to “open streets” and cyclovias in the US. The project, which is expected to be completed at the beginning of November, will start with a print guide and a Wiki-style website that is being prepared by Open Plans, the nonprofit operator of Streetsblog.
Open streets/cyclovias involve the closing of thoroughfares to automobile traffic at certain times. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and other people-centric uses are encouraged. About 60 projects are being researched through this effort, says Mike Lydon, an urban planner with Street Plans.
The project is being funded by a $45,000 grant to the alliance from the Orem Foundation’s Fund for the Environment and Urban Life.
