Duany honored by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Scotland
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) announced the appointment of Andres Duany of DPZ as an honorary member.
Andres Duany was selected for honorary membership "in recognition of the vital contribution he has made to the built environment, not only in Scotland, but across the world. Duany’s appointment dovetails well with the Institution’s Vision for Cities programme which outlines the environmental, economic and social context in which city governments and property professionals across the globe are planning and delivering long-term infrastructure."
Duany is graduate of both Yale and Princeton and the co-founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism in 1993. Duany co-founded DPZ with his wife Elizabeth in 1977 and in the last seven years, DPZ has been continually developing a new model zoning code called the SmartCode. The firm’s method of integrating master plans with project-specific design codes and regulations is currently being applied to sites across the United States. DPZ projects are also underway in Scotland, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Spain, England, Russia, Turkey, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
RICS Scotland Director, Graeme Hartley, said: “Andres Duany is a world recognised figure in the areas of planning and development, and although he is not a surveyor, his connection to the profession and the influence he has through the position he holds is incalculable. The passion and commitment that Andres brings to work that he does is nothing short of inspiring and we are delighted to have him as a member.”
Duany, in response, replied: “This is indeed an honour. The profession of Chartered Surveyor does not exist in the U.S., and it has been a pleasant revelation that such exists in Britain. I must say that I feel a greater kinship with the rationality and business acumen of the Surveyors than with the general run of my colleagues in architecture, who seem on the whole to have lost their good sense.”
