Newland Communities developer of the 1200-unit 270-acre Clarksburg Town Center in Montgomery County

Newland Communities, developer of the 1,200-unit, 270-acre Clarksburg Town Center in Montgomery County, Maryland, has been fined $22,000 by the County Planning Board for building in ways that were at odds with what the county had approved. “Among the unauthorized changes were the addition of duplex houses in areas where none were planned; a failure to note that the company was supposed to build a parking lot for a new county library; a reduction of about 14,000 square feet in the amount of planned retail space; and the deletion of design elements such as brick sidewalks, bluestone paving and granite edging in some public areas,” The Washington Post reported. Residents have complained for years about Newland’s failure to develop the mixed use center of Clarksburg as envisioned by an earlier developer, Terrabrook Properties.
