A 90- to 100-room hotel planned for Southern

A 90- to 100-room hotel planned for Southern Village, a traditional neighborhood development in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has been shelved in response to neighborhood concerns, according to the Herald-Sun newspaper. “Although some Southern Village residents and business owners supported the developer’s assertion that the community would benefit from another commercial anchor, dozens of others petitioned against the concept,” the paper reported in April. “E-mails to Chapel Hill Town Hall decried the potential impact of a hotel on the natural light that flows into the village center, safety and the overall character of Southern Village.” Developer D.R. Bryan said that the plan is now on hold and that he would work with the homeowners’ association and businesses to find other ways to improve economic vitality in the town center.
