Vertical construction is now underway at Twinbrook Station

Vertical construction is now underway at Twinbrook Station, formerly called Twinbrook Commons, a major transit-oriented development in Rockville, Maryland, that won a CNU Charter Award in 2004. JBG Companies, joint developer with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, says the nation’s financial troubles have not slowed construction or changed the plans. Wells Fargo bank financed the project.

Phase one, which includes 279 high-end apartments for lease and 15,000 square feet of neighborhood retail, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2010. The developer will then build structured parking for Metro and proceed with other phases. The redevelopment of 26 acres of surface parking, Twinbrook Station is planned to have 1,595 residential units, 220,000 square feet of retail, and 325,000 square feet of workplace space.

Rockville, a city of 58,000 population, is becoming a significant center of transit-oriented development. The city has three Metro stations, and all three now have Charter Award-winning developments. The others are Rockville Town Square (near the Rockville station) and King Farm (near Shady Grove station).
