Emily Talen won this year’s award for best article in the Journal of Planning Education and Research, for her analysis, “New Urbanism, Social Equity, and the Challenge of Post-Katrina Rebuilding in Mississippi.” Talen, a planning professor at Arizona State University, examined plans that new urbanists produced for 11 damaged coastal communities. The award committee said the article makes a compelling case for why New Urbanists must go beyond physical design and become “vocal advocates and enablers” for social equity goals, such as neighborhoods that are socially diverse.
