The City of San Gabriel, California, adopted a plan aimed at transforming Valley Boulevard — the community’s major transportation corridor — and the adjacent residential neighborhoods into a vibrant mixed-use area. The Valley Vision Plan calls for placing mixed-use buildings — including housing, offices, and light industry — near public transit to promote walking and to reduce automobile use and air pollution. Streetscapes will be furnished with drought-tolerant native plants. The plan, prepared by PBS&J, recently won a Blueprint Compass Award from the Southern California Association of Governments. Another Blueprint Compass Award was presented to the City of Ontario for its 8,200-acre specific plan district. A dairying area in Ontario is to be developed into a series of residential villages, high-density mixed-use centers, a town center, and business parks, all integrated by a greenways network and other natural amenities. Ontario’s plan, for what’s called the New Model Colony, was prepared by PBS&J.
