Public officials in Miramar, Florida, recently approved the privately developed portion of the city’s town center. The suburban city bought the 54-acre site for $7.8 million, according to assistant city manager Wazir Ishmael, and hired Torti Gallas & Partners to plan the site. The city put in the entitlements and increased the value tremendously, selling 40 of the acres to the Rockefeller Group, a private developer, for $11.4 million. The Rockefeller Group sold the residential portion to Lowell Homes and the retail commercial portion to Kimco Realty Corporation. The city retained 14 acres for public buildings, including a city hall (already built), library, performing arts center, and educational center. The private portion will have 504 residential units, 175,000 sq. ft. of retail, and 50,000 sq. ft. of offices. Hart/Howerton refined the plan.
