In one of the largest transit-oriented developments in Maryland’s Montgomery County in years, the county has approved a plan that would transform an industrial zone around the Shady Grove Metro station into an urban center with office buildings, shops, and housing for 12,000 people over the next 20 years. The County Council voted to allow up to 6,340 apartments, townhouses, and detached houses in a 200-acre area near the station. A quarter of the units will be set aside as affordable, the Washington Post reported Jan. 18.
