Peachtree City, a suburban Georgia, municipality with 31,500

Peachtree City, a suburban Georgia, municipality with 31,500 residents, has successfully promoted golf carts as an alternative mode of transportation. Founded in 1959, the municipality has 23 square miles and 90 miles of multiuse paths. More than 10,500 golf carts are registered to use these paths, built along sewer lines rights of way. “By allowing the use of golf carts on our multiuse paths, we take more cars off the road than the bus systems of neighboring counties,” Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown wrote to New Urban News. “We have exploded the traditional distance limitations of TND standards. Our village core serves a far greater distance with the help of the golf carts. Seniors that can no longer travel by car, the disabled, and new immigrant families can still get around anywhere in the city on a golf cart.”
