New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. announced in late June that he would like to convert a short expressway segment near the Connecticut city’s downtown to a boulevard. Filling a sunken, less-than-one-mile section of the Route 34 Oak Street Connector and rebuilding the route as a boulevard would help knit the city together and make way for four-story office buildings with street-level retail on approximately 13 reclaimed acres, DeStefano said. Conversion had earlier been suggested by the New Haven Urban Design League. A feasibility study, for which funds have not been appropriated, would first be needed.
