Leaders in San Jose, California, have begun what could be a momentous overhaul of development policies governing more than a third of the land in the 926,000-population city. The city’s plans could add 70,000 units of housing and increase the city’s industrial space by 50,000 square feet, the San Jose Business Journal reported. An evaluation of the region’s economy found that “no longer did area businesses want the low-slung, one- and two-story concrete research and development buildings so emblematic of Silicon Valley’s grittier past,” according to the Business Journal. A new class of company such as eBay and BEA systems reportedly “wanted mid-rise structures with lots of glass.” Tiny start-ups prefer being tenants in large buildings that have restaurants and housing nearby. u
