On any given day, more than half the non-drivers aged 65 and over stay home because their transportation choices are limited, says a new report from the Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP). “Aging Americans: Stranded Without Options” warns that as baby boomers age, many of them will risk becoming isolated unless transportation services improve. Americans 65 and older reportedly make only 8 percent of their trips by walking. Street safety is a large problem. In a recent STPP poll, 42 percent of Americans reported that dangerous intersections make crossing the street difficult where they live. The report, released in collaboration with the American Association of Retired Persons, recommends providing more public transportation choices; increasing the funds and flexibility of existing programs that serve older people; improving coordination of transportation planning and land-use planning, and improving street design, among other remedies.
