The Village at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

The Village at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, a new urban community with a lot of promise, is going through “restructuring” after one of the development partners died, according to codeveloper John Hawley. As a result, the project has slowed considerably. About 50 homes have been built and occupied, and the town center has begun development. Only a few lots are left in phase two, and phase three cannot begin until the succession issues are resolved, Hawley says. The Village may be the only traditional neighborhood development where the town center and residential neighborhoods have begun separately, with no physical connection. That connection will come in phase three. “The 8-acre village center will be quite fabulous, it will have a variety of uses, and it has the wonderful advantage of being on the main artery,” Hawley says. Currently, two two-story buildings house a bank, a pharmacy, and offices. The visibility from the highway allows the businesses to survive independently of the residences at this point.
