A 10-acre infill development by new urbanist Nate Bowman won the American Planning Association’s Outstanding Planning: Implementation award for 2003. The Southside Area Development Plan in Greensboro, North Carolina, designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, includes 100 residences — a combination of new and rehabilitated townhouses, live/work units, and single-family houses — priced from $129,000 to $261,000. The project is located in an economically depressed neighborhood. “The first residents moved in during the summer of 2001, a new art gallery opened in 2002, and despite a depressed national economy, home sales in the first three weeks of 2003 set a record,” according to Planning magazine.
