Pedestrians account for 12 percent of U.S.

Pedestrians account for 12 percent of U.S. traffic deaths, but less than one percent of federal transportation funds goes toward protecting people on foot, according to a report from the Surface Transportation Policy Project. Orlando is the most dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians. The other metro areas in the terrible top ten are Tampa, West Palm Beach, Memphis, Jacksonville, Miami, Houston, Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Nashville. All but Orlando devote less federal money than the national average to pedestrian safety, according to “Mean Streets 2002,” which is available at www.transact.org.
