September 28, CNU's Board of Directors decided to organize regional and student CNU chapters. The chapters will start slow, in order to work out the kinks in management, fundraising, and administration. Nascent chapters in Florida and Pennsylvania are likely to be the pilots. Several student organizations to promote New Urbanism already exist; CNU will now develop specific policies and protocols the groups can use to become chapters. ¡If you believe your region is ripe for a CNU chapter, feel free to send a note to Steven Bodzin, sbodzin@cnu.org. In September, Aksel Olson, a geography student spending a year abroad at the University of California at San Diego, completed an internship in the CNU office. He cataloged thousands of slides that CNU had collected over the years. The resulting slide library is currently for internal use but will eventually become part of our online imagebank. CNU is cosponsoring the Performance Institute’s San Diego conference on greyfield malls, Greyfields 2002, to be held in San Diego November 21 and 22. It will be the second conference by the Performance Institute on the topic of redeveloping greyfield malls into neighborhoods. CNU members pioneered research into this major new direction for real estate development. Now we are reaching out to more of the development world, in order to get greyfield development to the next stage. The brochure for the conference is on CNU’s site. CNU members get a discount off the usual registration fee of $995 nonprofit or $1295 regular.
