Avalon at Arlington Square
Avalon at Arlington Square, which opened its doors this January in Arlington, Virginia, is a new urbanist take on the rental apartment community. Master planned by Torti Gallas/CHK of Silver Spring, Maryland, (in collaboration with SKG Architects and Land Design), the 20-acre project features a mix of side-by-side townhouses, stacked flats, and three- or four-story live/work buildings. The project replaces the clustered apartments formerly on the site with a network of streets and alleys and a central green, anchored by a recreation center and lined with walk-up townhouses. The project is the first new urbanist experiment for developer AvalonBay Communities, a real estate investment trust. The completed first phase of the development includes 510 market-rate apartments and 101 subsidized units.
