The redevelopment of a naval base in North Charleston
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    APR. 1, 2001
The redevelopment of a naval base may become the first phase of a revitalization of 3,000 acres in the community of North Charleston, South Carolina. The city intends to buy 350 acres from the Charleston Naval Base Redevelopment Authority and then sell it to a private developer who will build a waterfront park and new housing units connecting to existing neighborhoods. The overall revitalization, dubbed Noisette, could include 10,000 new and renovated residential units and up to 8 million square feet of commercial space. A comprehensive master plan will be drawn up over the next two years.
