The Hillier Group Architects has expanded to include an Urban Design Practice. Hillier staff members who will compose the core group of urban designers include: Scott Killinger, managing principal of Hillier Philadelphia; D. Thomas Stearns, a studio principal and director of Hillier’s Land Planning Studio; Kevin Sloan, an award-winning planner and architect based in Hillier’s Dallas office; and Michael Saltzman, cofounder and leadership group member of Hillier’s Newark office. New hires for the design group include: Anish Kumar, an award-winning urban planner, writer, and adjunct professor at Drexel University, who will head the new practice; and Steven Stainbrook, formerly of Hardy Holtzman Pfieffer Architects in New York, who joins the new practice as senior planner. Kumar says, “The power of planning cannot be underestimated. Urban blight and decline of our older communities is directly connected to suburban sprawl. ... Sprawl gets the headlines, but our focus should be the corner grocery store.” The Hillier Group offers services in architecture, interior design, planning, urban design, historic preservation, graphic design, and landscape architecture to an international clientele through nine offices.
