A host of mixed-use buildings are under construction in the Los Angeles area, and this trend is expected to more than double the number of residential units located above commercial uses in that city, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal. Projects are now under construction or planned for downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, Playa Vista, Long Beach, Hollywood, and Burbank. The Business Journal notes that the first modern mixed-use buildings in Los Angeles were built in 1989, and these were expected to generate interest in this type of development. However, imitators did not materialize — until recently. The New Urbanism has given a boost to this trend. Mixed-use buildings are rising in Playa Vista and Paseo Colorado, two prominent projects with new urbanist design in the region.
