Projects are now under construction or planned for downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, Playa Vista, Long Beach, Hollywood, and Burbank. The Business Journal notes that the first modern mixed-use buildings in Los Angeles were built in 1989, and these were expected to generate interest in this type of development. However, imitators did not materialize — until recently. The New Urbanism has given a boost to this trend. Mixed-use buildings are rising in Playa Vista and Paseo Colorado, two prominent projects with new urbanist design in the region.
