American CityVista, a venture between former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros and builder Kaufman & Broad (see October/November 2000), has begun its first residential development, Lago Vista in San Antonio, Texas. The company plans to build 600 single-family homes on the 130-acre site. According to Kamme Johns of American CityVista, Lago Vista does not connect to any existing neighborhoods. Homes will sell for between $75,000 and $120,000, or $45 to $62 per square foot, and 70 were sold on the first weekend. American CityVista’s next project may be closer to the “urban village” concept Cisneros espouses. According to USA Today, the company may soon close a deal on a 30-acre site on the west side of Las Vegas’ downtown in a predominantly African American neighborhood. The company hopes to build 100 homes in this location. While Las Vegas’ strip has flourished, downtown has been neglected. Mayor Oscar Goodman is lobbying hard for a revitalization that start with bringing a critical mass of residents to the area.
