“The New Urbanism has sparked renewed interest

“The New Urbanism has sparked renewed interest in the work of urban designers from the late 19th and early 20th Century. In an effort to bring the insights of these generalists to today’s specialized civil engineers, town planner and engineer Peter Swift is translating parts of Josef Stubben’s 1907 Handbuch der Architektur (Handbook of Architecture). Two chapters have been completed, featuring a richly illustrated, in-depth discussion of the design of public squares. Stubben was a leading member of the German Garden City movement, but very little of his work is available today. “The outstanding thing about the book is that Stubben is able to address architecture, landscaping, and civil engineering with equal clarity and depth,” Swift says. Swift is currently raising money for the completion of the translation. For more information, contact Swift at (303) 772-7052 or Phswi@aol.com.
