ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    DEC. 1, 2000
The Town Council of Huntington Township, New York, has selected Ron Stein as the municipality’s first smart growth coordinator. Stein founded the nonprofit group Vision Huntington, which spearheaded an effective campaign to get public officials and business leaders in the suburban Long Island town of 200,000 to adopt smart growth principles. As of late October, 2000, Stein was negotiating the details of the contract with town officials.
Huntington’s first new urbanist project is moving forward. A 30-acre plan by architect Richard Heapes bears similarities to Heapes’ well-known Mizner Park in Boca Raton, Florida. A preliminary plan of the high-density, mixed-use project proposed by Mark Mediavilla has been presented to municipal planners.
