The Town of Cornelius, North Carolina, signed a letter of intent with Simonini Development Group to develop a 125-acre transit-oriented project. The 950-unit, mixed-use project on the other side of a planned rail line from Cornelius’ town center was planned by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company in a charrette in March 2000.
The project, sponsored by the town, generated interest from numerous developers. Simonini is a high profile, respected regional developer that is attempting its first new urbanist project. “They were looking for a flagship site in the Charlotte region for their next project,” Assistant Town Manager Timothy Brown says.
