Vickery, the first complete new urbanist neighborhood
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    OCT. 1, 2000
Vickery, the first complete new urbanist neighborhood proposed in the Atlanta region, is running into opposition from neighbors who object to its density. The 210-acre development in Forsythe County is proposed for a site that currently has half-acre zoning. The county planning commission has recommended approval, but at least one county commissioner has asked for a postponement of the final approval vote to examine the issues raised by opponents.
Michael Kilgallon, president of the Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association, favors Vickery. “One of the things that I am discouraged about in Atlanta is that there are no examples of smart growth,” he says. Riverside, a high-density urban core project, is built, but that project has no single homes — the type of housing favored by most Atlantans.
