The City of Aspen, Colorado, recently approved a $1 million revitalization of three downtown blocks in response to a citizen- initiated plan to revamp parking and encourage pedestrian use of downtown. Design Workshop, a landscape architecture and planning firm, created a streetscape that includes wider, brick-paved sidewalks, new street trees, benches, and public art. Pedestrian space will be enlarged by replacing angled parking with parallel parking, which allows sidewalks to be five feet wider on both sides of the street. The eliminated parking spaces will be compensated for by reassigning underused high occupancy vehicle (HOV) spaces to paid parking. Construction will begin during the spring of 2000.
