The 1999 Seaside Prize was awarded to Robert A. M. Stern, dean of Yale University School of Architecture and one of the architects of Disney’s Celebration. The prize, to
be presented May 15, is annually awarded by the Seaside Institute in Seaside, Florida, to individuals or organizations making significant contributions to the quality and character of communities. Other winners have been Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) founders Peter Calthorpe, Elizabeth Moule, Stefanos Polyzoides and Daniel Solomon jointly in 1998; Mayor of Charleston Joseph Riley (1997); Jane Jacobs and Leon Krier (1996); the City of Portland, Oregon (1995); Christopher Alexander (1994); and Vincent Scully with CNU founders and Seaside designers Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk (1993).
