“Big-box stores married to residences are appearing in Chicago, Washington, Seattle and San Francisco,” The New York Times reported Aug. 19 in an article titled “Shopping on 1, Sleeping on 2.” “To satisfy the needs of commuters tired of commuting and bored empty nesters heading back to the cities, big-box retailers are considering even small and marginal lots as building sites, topping them off with housing,” according to the article. A few of the residents quoted in the article said noise from street level bothers them, but others said noise is part of city life, and noted that being close to stores is convenient.
