Since 1995, the City of Aspen, Colorado, has had a set of residential design standards for new construction intended to preserve the scale and character of established neighborhoods. Front facades of all principal structures must be parallel to the street, and at least 60 percent of the facade has to be within five feet of the minimum setback line. Porches can be used to meet that standard. Garages or carports must be accessed from alleys where these exist, and elsewhere the first floor living area has to be at least five feet wider than the garage. Garages must also be set back at least 10 feet farther from the street than the facade of the house. Houses must have a street-facing entrance and principal windows.
