The 2010 Jane Jacobs Medal
The 2010 Jane Jacobs Medal has been presented to Joshua David and Robert Hammond, cofounders of Friends of the High Line, and Elizabeth Barlow Rogers of the Central Park Conservancy. The Friends group has raised nearly $50 million for construction of the first two segments of the High Line, a 1.5-mile elevated park on a former railroad viaduct running through the West Side of Manhattan, and for its endowment.
The initial segment of the High Line from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 20th Street opened in June 2009. The park has become a public attraction, and has spurred development nearby. The second section will run from 20th Street to 34th Street. The awards were presented by the Rockefeller Foundation and New York’s Municipal Art Society.
