About the survey and list

This survey identifies site-specific projects — either in planning, in construction, or completed — that are at least 15 acres and are based on principles of New Urbanism. The projects are mixed-use, laid out with an interconnected network of streets and blocks, and have some form of neighborhood center or centers. Almost all projects have a retail component, with the exception of a few infill projects where residences are, or will be, within a short walk along urban streets to retail. The list is gathered through contacts with new urbanist design firms and developers, discussions with public officials, a search of media reports from around the nation, and New Urban News’ s own reporting. Projects are verified through site visits whenever possible, examination of plans and photographs, and discussions with new urbanists who are familiar with the projects or plans. This survey does not include general visioning plans, regional or semi-regional plans, or small projects, no matter how well-designed. The survey therefore does not measure the entire New Urbanism movement, but it does track a key component that can be measured from year to year. u
