After three years of public debate, the Planning and Zoning Commission of Madison, Connecticut, has given Leyland Alliance of Tuxedo, New York, approval to develop a 42-acre new urban community called Madison Landing. The development, planned principally by New Haven architect Robert Orr on the site of a small airport next to Long Island Sound, is to include 127 units — a mix of condominium apartments, townhouses, and freestanding houses. Construction is expected to start after Leyland obtains permits to install a wastewater treatment system. Opposition from a group of Madison residents who claimed the project would cause environmental damage reduced the number of units from the 192 originally proposed. Madison Landing will be limited to people aged 55 and older.
