Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk win Driehaus

Miami architects Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk will receive the Richard H. Driehaus Prize for Classical Architecture, which now comes with $200,000 — twice as much money as in past years. Richard Driehaus, founder and chairman of Chicago-based Driehaus Capital Management, said Duany and Plater-Zyberk, as champions of New Urbanism and principals of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. (DPZ), “have promoted the value system that defines classical architecture.”
“Their body of work emphasizes community and context, which are the underpinnings of classical design,” said Driehaus, who established the prize in 2003. He is doubling the size of the grant to draw more attention to the Driehaus Prize, which previously had the same monetary value as the Pritzker Prize, typically awarded to a prominent modernist.
The University of Notre Dame School of Architecture will make the presentation to Duany and Plater-Zyberk March 29 in Chicago. “We will be dedicating the prize money entirely to the  writing an publishing of books by members of DPZ and other new urbanists,” Duany told New Urban News. “There are quite a few interesting ongoing publications that could use the help.”
