Andres Duany of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. and J. Carson Looney of Looney Ricks Kiss architects and planners were named as two of the “30 Top Innovators of the Past 30 Years” by Builder magazine during the 2009 International Builders Show. The list of 30 also included architect Sarah Susanka, who has promoted well-designed small houses; Albert B. Ratner of Forest City Enterprises, which is developing large new urban projects; and Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity. Some of the “innovators” have more troubled reputations, such as Angelo Mozilo, founder of Countrywide Financial; Samuel Zell, the investor whose control of the Tribune Company recently culminated in a corporate bankruptcy; and Alan Greenspan, whose chairmanship of the Federal Reserve is now seen as one of the factors that brought about the housing industry’s collapse.
