Architect Daniel Parolek of Envision Design in Berkeley, California, has designed the winning entry in the New Growth Area category of the international competition Housing the Next Ten Million. Sponsored by the Great Valley Center and the AIA California Council, the competition sought answers for how future growth is to be accommodated in California’s Great Central Valley, which is estimated to grow by 10 million people by the year 2040. Parolek’s proposal for the City of Modesto includes an urban village prototype with mixed-use neighborhood centers and an interconnected street network, a strategic plan, and a visual urban design code based on housing types. Parolek based the urban village on the patterns of traditional mixed-use communities, with an emphasis on pedestrian orientation and a quality public realm. Along with four other category winners, Parolek’s proposal will be part of a traveling exhibit designed to encourage community workshops and citizen involvement in the planning process.
