The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) has broken

The Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) has broken ground on Historic Westside Village, the first publicly instigated new urbanist project in the city. The $140- million mixed-use neighborhood center is being built in the historic heart of the city’s African American cultural and commercial life. Spanning three city blocks, Historic Westside Village’s 15 acres will include 101 apartments and 85 loft units above ground floor retail, 35 townhomes, 120 condominiums, and two 150,000-square-foot office buildings. The 200,000 square feet of retail includes a 27,000-square-foot supermarket, the first part of the project to go into construction. Historic Westside Village is located within walking distance of the Atlanta University Center, with close to 17,000 students, faculty, and staff. More than 10,000 residences lie within a one-mile radius, and the site is served by a MARTA train station and bus service. According to ADA’s project manager, Pete Haley, the project has become a catalyst for several other residential developments in the vicinity. In addition to ADA, the development team includes the Harold A. Dawson Co. and The Integral Group. The project is designed by Turner Associates/Architects & Planners.
