Atlanta has adopted zoning changes that should make it much easier to build live-work and mixed-use development. A new live- work zoning category will let people put their shop or office on the ground floor and occupy living quarters above. A mixed-use zoning category will increase the likelihood that developers will combine housing, stores, and offices in a single complex. A multifamily zoning category will permit high-rise housing with the ground floor occupied by businesses such as coffeehouses, florists, laundries, or haircutters. City planner Enrique Bascunana said that in mixed-use developments, new design guidelines will encourage shops to be placed along the sidewalk rather than facing an atrium on the interior — the Atlanta idea popular 30 years ago.
