Barry Spitznass (1945-1999)
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    JUL. 1, 1999
BARRY SPITZNASS, 53, a charter member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 2. He was an avid new urbanist who developed several projects in the Bloomington, Illinois, area, including Goose Creek Apartments, Woodland Ridge, Westwood, and Dakota Grove. For many, his most memorable project was Douglas Street Apartments, the redevelopment of a former warehouse into low-income housing. “I’m proud of it,” Spitznass said of the project in a November, 1998, interview. “It will make a long-term contribution to the downtown.” Spitznass had many friends in the new urbanist community, and will be missed.
