Bloomberg envisions 300-square-foot apartments for New Yorkers
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced a City-sponsored competition to design an apartment building made up to 275- to 300-square-foot "micro-units." Each micro-unit would have a kitchen, bathroom, pull-out bed, and no closet, as shown in the rendering from the mayor's office above. Why? Because, according to The New York Times, there are about 1.8 million one- or two-person households in the city, but only one million studios or one-bedroom apartments. And individuals continue moving to New York, often without much money. For the project, the City would waive the minimum apartment size of 450 square feet.
