The Building Homes in America’s Cities Initiative
ROBERT STEUTEVILLE    MAR. 1, 2000
The Building Homes in America’s Cities Initiative is a major new effort led by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to build more than one million new homes in the nation’s cities over the next 10 years. The program’s focus is to increase homeownership among city dwellers, especially in the Hispanic and African American communities, and to remove barriers to new construction. HUD will cooperate with the National Association of Home Builders and the U.S. Conference of Mayors to make the plan a reality. Fourteen cities have been selected to host pilot programs, and an advisory council will monitor progress and compile information on best practices and successful models.
