Charlotte launches Charlotte 2030: A Sustainable Vision For Our Region

Charlotte, NC—On Monday, November 1, government and community leaders will gather at the Square at Trade and Tryon in Uptown Charlotte to launch Charlotte 2030: A Sustainable Vision For Our Region.  Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx; Mecklenburg County Commissioners Jennifer Roberts and George Dunlap; Sustain Charlotte Executive Director Shannon Binns; CPCC Center for Sustainability Director Ernie McLaney; Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation Director Jim Garges; CMS Manager of Environmental Health and Safety Brian Kasher; and others will speak at the event.

New local non-profit Sustain Charlotte compiled the vision, which includes ideas from more than 100 citizens, local leaders and sustainability experts.  The goal is to provide a sustainable framework that can guide both individual and organizational decision-making.  The comprehensive Vision addresses ten aspects of urban sustainability: Air, Energy, Food, Buildings and Homes, Economy, Trees and Green Space, Waste, Social Equity, Transportation, and Water.

“Local citizens working in business, government, academia, and the nonprofit sector have come together to create this vision for our common future,” said Shannon Binns, Executive Director of Sustain Charlotte.  “By continuing to work together, and seeing past our perceived differences, I believe we can achieve the future we all desire – a future in which social equity, environmental health, and economic vitality co-exist.”

Copies of the Vision will be available on site from 11:00am-1:00pm.  Speakers will take the podium at noon. GEEP, an electronics recycler with a full processing facility in Durham, NC, will also be on hand to collect handheld electronic devices (cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, handheld radios, etc.) for recycling and answer any questions the public may have.  A GEEP display will illustrate the electronics recycling process, and show how electronic devices ranging from coffee makers to computers can be broken down into raw materials and used again.  GEEP has state-of-the-art facilities and a Zero Waste goal; currently, 97% of materials taken in by GEEP are recycled.
