The City of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was awarded the 1999 White House Joint Center Sustainable Community Award for instigating the redevelopment of the failing Eastgate Mall into a main street retail and office district with a future residential element. The award was presented by President Clinton and also recognized the contributions of the project’s designers, Dover Kohl and Partners and Gibbs Planning Group. Each year the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities selects one project that “best reflects the benefits of sustainability as applied cooperatively within a community.”
