A page 1 article in the June 2009 issue referred to Hampton, Virginia, as a city with “little or no existing urbanism.” While mostly suburban in character, Hampton has a historic area with a grid of streets and a downtown. The city has been working for several years to improve the urban character of these and other neighborhoods, reports Paul Ostergaard, a principal with Urban Design Associates, the Pittsburgh firm that has been working with Hampton on a variety of urban plans in recent years. In 2004, Urban Design Associates authored a plan showing how the Coliseum Mall could be transformed into a town center. That plan led to the current redevelopment of the site — which was the subject of the June article. u
