CNU is now taking orders for the first edition of Charter, a book of 27 essays and commentary which expand on the principles outlined in the Charter of the New Urbanism, the guiding document of this revolution in the way cities are designed, built, and managed. The book is authored by leading practitioners of New Urbanism and illustrated with case studies from around the country. Charter ($49.95) will be published by McGraw-Hill this fall.
The Urban Land Institute released an eagerly awaited study, entitled Valuing the New Urbanism. The report, conducted by Mark Eppli and Charles Tu of George Washington University, concluded that homebuyers are willing to pay a premium for houses in new urbanist communities over conventional suburbs. To order, contact ULI: (202) 624-7000.
The U.S. General Services Administration has announced a partnership with CNU to guide the design and development of its real estate holdings in order to promote downtown revitalization, smart growth, and livability. GSA is the nation’s largest real estate organization, providing space for 1 million federal workers in 330 million square feet of facilities in 1,600 communities.
The first Catherine Brown Awards for the Landscape of the New Urbanism were announced at CNU VII. The winners are: Forest Park Master Plan (St. Louis Redevelopment Corporation) and Master Plan for the Redevelopment of the Orlando Naval Training Center (City of Orlando). Honorable Mentions are the Milwaukee RiverWalk (Ken Kay Associates) and the South Dade Watershed Project (Daniel Williams).
